Last night Haley was taking her bath and of Megan was right there watching on the outside. (We can not put Megan in that tub without her going into major hysterics, can't figure it out. She loves her little tub, but don't even take her in the bathroom naked)Haley was goofing around and got Megan really hard. I couldn't take video (she's was naked) but here is the audio.

The Christmas Letter
Every year I send out a Christmas letter, but this year I'm doing it on here. Why? Well it's better for the environment, less paper. Cheaper too, I don't need to buy fancy paper and stamps. The postman won't use gas to get the mail to your house, and you don't have to feel guilty when you throw it away. All of these reasons are true, but I have to admit I'm just feeling a little lazy this year!
As the year comes to a close and I begin to compose this letter in my head, I start thinking about everything that happened this year. Holy Toledo (I can say that now that I live elsewhere) it has been a crazy year. A roller coaster of a year and I'm looking forward to the ride slowing down. I don't want to get off, but the loops are getting old and I think maybe one of those lazy river kind of rides is more of what I'm looking for now.
A quick summary, starting in the spring, because I don't even remember the beginning of the year: The daycare we used told us she was closing a week before Megan was born. Thankfully we found a fantastic lady and I'm so so so grateful. Then Megan was born, and I love her with all my heart and she is healthy and beautiful, but we all know it has been a journey. Right when I was going back to work, Bruce lost his job and that was a little (lot) scary. He has since found a job and is doing very well at it and we are crossing our fingers that no layoffs will touch us.
We lost Grandpa "Blueberry" and it was heartbreaking, but we did get to spend a few days in upstate New York with Bruce's family. We haven't done that in years, especially with both kids. My brother and his wife welcomed a baby girl 8 days after Megan, and Lucy is a beautiful little baby and I'm so happy for them. This year has had a lot of ups and downs, but there is always a positive and that's what I try to focus on.
I haven't found the positive of the broken toilet, maybe we all get to bond while waiting in line for the other bathroom?
Merry Christmas from the Davis Family!

Got a Camera, update on the girls!
I have had a hard time finding time to sit, get my thoughts together and write. The kids are great, driving me up the wall. Haley is still all about politics...what have I done? Almost daily, she will ask for another story about George Bush (although there are tons to tell, which ones are appropriate?), point out McCain or Obama if she see a picture, and just talks randomly about it all. Bruce had her at the store the other day, she almost had a heart attack when they rolled past the magazines with Time/Newsweek/etc! I'm trying very hard to be impartial when explaining it to her, so please keep your lecture to yourself. :)
Megan is, well, she is Megan! I do love her with all my heart and she is a beautiful, healthy baby. When Megan is happy, she is so quick to smile and has tons of personality. When Megan is not happy, hide. She is still off and on when it comes to sleeping through the night. Some nights yes, some nights no. And when she does get up, its not one time...she'll be up about 4 times! ARGH! She is lucky she is so cute. And her hair! Haley has the straightest, finest hair I have ever seen. We have always been perplexed as to how (Bruce and I are curly, as is the rest of our families) but she is who she is. Megan sure makes up for what Haley is lacking. Check out the pic!
The sister thing is still good. Megan is up Haley's dupa all the time, and Haley gets annoyed here and there, but overall, she tolerates it and even instigates it. I can't believe how easy going Haley has been when Megan destroys something. Megan has an insatiable appetite for paper...your guess is as good as mine...and has chewed quite a few puzzle pieces. Haley just deals with it, I feel worse for her than she does! Just say a prayer that Megan doesn't get her hands on the Hannah Montana Holiday doll. I'm dreading that scream.

Kleenex and bruises
It's been awhile. I know. And it's been awhile since our house has been "sniffles" free. I'm so tired of kleenex boxes in every room. Have you noticed how trendy the boxes are though? First Bruce, then Haley, then Megan, now me, and Bruce is sick again as well. Argh! This is going on week 3. Megan had it the worst though, poor little thing. She looked horrible and had a pretty bad cough. Don't worry though, the kids are back to being great. I just wish someone would give a rat's tukus when Mom is sick! Oh well, I love my family.
Megan is into a full crawl now, going from one room to the next, getting into things, not sitting still. She even re-arranged my tupperware cabinet for me, how thoughtful! Silly me, I had it organized. She has also mastered pulling herself up on anything she can and is trying really hard to figure out how to move the legs. Now if we could teach her how to get back down from standing. Poor kid has a bruise on her cheek today, last week on her forehead...never falls on her dupa, just her head. Haley has been trying to explain to her that when you fall you don't need to cry, you just get back up. What a good big sister. Gosh, remember how she was when she was learning to walk? New day, new bruise. OH! and talk about curly hair! Now that Megan is getting her hair in, she is soooo not going to have the stick straight, super fine hair like Haley.
We are still camera-less. Bruce is going to go "Black Friday" shopping to try to get us one. Wish him luck. I'm nervous about his adventure. As much as I love my husband, I really don't see him handling shopping that day very well. We all know his lack of patience and God help us if things don't go well. Keep your fingers crossed.

Halloween!

Megan was a giraffe. She fell asleep in the stroller while trick r treating, it was really cute! Lucy (and her parents) joined us for a little while. Haley was insisting at some of the doors for candy for Megan and Lucy, such a big sister/cousin.

I know I know...shame on me, I haven't written in a little while. It certainly isn't for lack of anything to say, things have been busy here! Things are good, life is flying by.
The girls are doing great. Megan is loving solids, although feeding time has become difficult. She has learned a new trick. She can blow "raspberries" or "zerberts" or what ever you want to call it...you know, when you put your lips together and blow. What is the correct word for that anyways? She does it all the time, but really likes to do it when she has food in her mouth. Griselda and I have been covered in peas and carrots lately and although it's frustrating, it's kind of funny. I remember when Haley learned to do it, a memory I have is her doing it in Target really loud and causing quite the scene.
Megan is still trying to stand whenever possible and we have caught her a few times trying to pull herself up from a sitting position to stand. She just turned 6 months, I'm not ready for that! She can also get herself into a sitting position if she is semi-reclined, like in a bouncer chair or something. If she is laying down, she rolls everywhere. The kid is going to be mobile very soon! Hasn't shown any interest in crawling though, she probably thinks it's a waste of time! As far as babbling goes, she really doesn't. She makes some sounds, but just doesn't carry on like many babies do (you should hear my niece Lucy!). My mom said that Megan probably doesn't bother trying to talk because she knows as long as Haley is around, she won't get a word in! Oh how true that is.
Speaking of Haley, can you believe my baby is now 4 years old? 4! She was thrilled with her Princess party and had many friends join her to celebrate. I took pictures with a disposable camera, hopefully they will turn out ok. I know it's been a few weeks but I keep forgetting to take the film to get developed! Griselda made her cake and it was amazing...it had Cinderella and the clock on it. Truly a cake from the heart. She is an awesome cake decorator (and baker!) and I really hope the pictures show how much detail she put in it. It was beautiful! I will post a ton of pictures when I can, promise!
I still can't believe she is 4. She sat down next to Bruce the other day and said "1 + 2 equals 3". He was shocked! She is learning so much at daycare and it blows my mind. Our conversations really tickle me too, the things that she comes up with. She is still my shadow and doesn't leave my side, and as frustrating as it can be at times, I know that it won't always be like this. Enjoy it while it lasts!

My random thoughts on life
Everyone is talking about the state of the economy, and I am one of those people. Yes, I'm scared. However, I just had a thought and I'm going to speak off the cuff here for a minute. I'm good at talking and then thinking, so if this doesn't make much sense, wait for the revised version tomorrow.
It amazes me sometimes at how freely people spend money when they have it, buying things you don't need. How now in life we can't go without the Internet, cell phones, a few cars in the family. The barter system is out the door, and forget doing things to help out a neighbor. Speaking of neighbors, name 3 families on your block. Can you do it?
This weekend I saw a garage sale sign and wanted to drive past it. Haley asked where we were going and I told her. She got very excited and said "I want to buy some old stuff! Mommy, can we buy me some old stuff to play with?" She could care less if it is not new and in a shiny package. A bike from a garage sale is still a bike. At what point do we learn to think it has to have a store tag on it?
My grandmother made her clothes, made my teddy bear, and would damn near pass out if she saw how much pre-packaged food was available at the grocery store. My father always told me I would need to learn to cook, but I have graced by on purchasing most things all ready done for me. Well now I am kicking myself and learning as I go. I have learned the importance of coupons and that a box of Bisquick is cheaper and makes way more pancakes then a box of frozen toaster pancakes...and more fun for Haley to help with.
So as nervous as I am about the future of our family and the future of America, I take solace in thinking that maybe this is what our generation and the ones behind us need. When Bruce lost his job, I had to really learn to save money. It wasn't as hard as I thought because I didn't have the money to waste. My toes have not fallen off from not getting a pedicure on a regular basis. This is a wake up call I think to everyone to slow down. Instant gratification is going to have to take a back seat. Maybe even a seat on the city bus because you can't afford gas. It's ok, we'll get through it, and our priorities will once again be where they should be. On family, neighbors, community. Look to your neighbors and maybe you'll even see that a potluck with some of them is a much cheaper (and more entertaining) evening then going to dinner at a restaurant. I'm not going to lie though, I really miss pedicures!

Pajama time!
I can't figure out how to rotate a video, so turn your head. Ha. I bought the kids matching pajamas. I know they'll hate this later in life, so I figure I can do it now. I have no idea what Haley is talking about in this, she just talks and talks

Care Bears and a snack
Driving home from a stressful trip to the store with both kids today, we were almost home when Haley spots a cloud with the sun behind it, making the cloud a beautiful bright orange. She became very excited and said "Megan! I just saw where the Care Bears live! Mommy! I think I saw a Care Bear!" Not wanting to be Debbie Downer, I played into it. She was so convinced she had seen where they live, who am I to ruin that? She was so happy and quietly gazing out the window looking for the cloud again through the trees. I was enjoying her young imagination and the silence until I hear "mmmmm boogers. Megan, I'm having a snack"

Megan is 5 months!
We have made it 5 months! I can't believe how much she has grown and developed in such a short time. She is so cute that I can't help but cover her in kisses every chance I get, and kissing her hands is still the best way to get a smile out of her.
She is still enthralled with her feet and Haley's hair-her two favorite things- but is working on mastering some new skills. She is officially an independent sitter...she can sit for long periods with no support, but of course you still need to stand by for the occasional topple over (which I still find entertaining). Her legs are very strong and she is great at standing. Of course we hold her hands, but I really don't think it's going to be long before she is mobile. Yikes. Haley was fully walking at 9 months, so we'll see if Megan beats that. Her first steps were at 8 months but she fell alot...oh wait, that may be because she never looked where she was going!
Today was a big day for her. She loves her cereal and so we decided it was time...maybe premature, but to each his own...I got out the green beans! We gathered around her in the kitchen, spoon in hand and up to her lips went the first taste of food (cereal is more about texture then taste). She had this look on her face, a mixture of confusion and disgust. I gave another spoonful, same thing. We thought for sure she didn't like it when all the sudden she was smacking her lips. Haley got out her spoon (such the mommy) and we both took turns feeding her. She LOVED it. She was smacking her lips and I swear she was like a dog begging for more. She ate the whole container, every last bite. When she was all done, she was sitting in her chair for a few minutes just smiling away. Happy as pie.
*There is no picture of her eating because my camera is not working. Not sure how I will survive!

Deep Thoughts.... by Haley Davis
If you have spent any time with Haley, you know that she asks alot of questions. Here is just a few from the other night when she couldn't sleep. She asked all these within 15 minutes. I'm going to continue this segment as time goes on because I find her questions funny and it makes me stop and realize that yeah, at 3 (almost 4!) you really don't know these answers.

Long Weekend!

This was a great Labor Day Weekend. We didn't do anything fantastic, but spent alot of time together and played alot. We started the weekend at WonderWorks, where I work. Not exactly where I wanted to be on a day off, but sometimes I forget that it is a place for kids and the Haley loves it. Dropped Megan off at Grandmas and off we went! She was thrilled and told the lady at Walgreens later that day all about it. (I swear they think she's insane -everytime we go there, she always has something to tell the employees) As we were leaving WonderWorks, she was really tired and resting on dad's shoulder....she's not really sleeping but thought it would make for a cute picture. Yes, her words.
This weekend was also filled with craft projects (we made a mosaic stepping stone!) and playing lots of different stuff. And Barbies. I really really really dislike playing Barbies. I cringe when I hear her ask. But you can only come up with so many excuses and sometimes you just have to give in. Grow up Megan and play with your sister is all I can think.
For all of you who think I exaggerate on how girly Haley is, let me tell you about the difficulty in getting Haley ready to go to WW. I got an outfit out of her drawer, she says "That's not adorable mommy". Oh, my bad. Here, how's this? "That's not adorable either". Ok, well...outfit 3? Nope. Ok, outfit 4? "Yes Mommy, good job." And last night after she went to bed, I put some pajama pants on and a tshirt. I heard a noise in her room and went to make sure she wasn't playing. Now keep in mind her room was dark. I stood in the doorway and asked what was going on. She was in bed and asked for water (turns out the noise wasn't her). As I walked back out to get her some water she says "mommy, that doesn't match". I said it did, and she shook her head and said "Go stand by my bathroom with the light on so I can see." I'm being critiqued by a 3 year old!!!!
Megan had fun too. She spent Saturday morning with Grandma then had a visit from her little cousin Lucy. She also has been working on standing. Yes, standing. It is all she wants to do lately! Her legs are very strong and she is doing pretty good with it. Honestly, she holds your thumbs to steady herself and stands for about a minute. We have been working with her to sit up unassisted, but she falls over pretty quickly. It's kinda entertaining for us in a weird parenting way. Oh, your parents laughed at you too.

First Cereal!
I have been having all sorts of issues putting videos on here. Today I went to post a new blog, and this was in my drafts! So apparently I can upload videos, I just didn't know it! This is Megan eating cereal for the first time. Of course Haley was right there helping!

Megan's 4 month checkup

We talked to the dr about the issues with Megan. He seems confident that she is ok, just high maintenance. His words, not ours, but I have to agree! We talked about some solutions about sleep so we'll see how it goes. Tonight she went to bed pretty easy...vodka in the bottle really does work! Just seeing if your paying attention. We also gave her some cereal tonight for the first time. I intended to wait a few more weeks but gave in. She was a bit confused by it but did pretty well. Haley was all about feeding her, which I knew she would be, she has been talking about it forever. She was coming out of her skin trying to get that spoon out of my hands! She is such the big sister. If I ever figure out the video thing on here, I'll post the video. I have some pics I will put up though.
Last night she slept through the night again, oh what sweet memories! Bruce and I seemed more tired today though, I think our bodies were just in shock. I'm praying that she does tonight as well. I really don't understand why it all changed, why she stopped sleeping at night, but I guess it's one of those things. I think once we get a handle on getting her to go to sleep easier will help staying asleep. And seriously, stop wondering if I was joking or not about the vodka.

The weekend
Monday, back to work. The weekend was good for the most part, just not when we were trying to sleep. Megan has stopped sleeping through the night and just screams. I really don't know what to do for her sometimes. She has her 4 month check up tomorrow, I'm anxious to see if he has any advice. She didn't take a nap longer than half hour this weekend, didn't sleep much at night. It's not gas, we know when she has gas. I honestly think it's bad dreams, but what in the world could she be dreaming about? I did get a lot of smiles, coos and cuddles though so I'm happy. When she's content, she's awesome. Her smile instantly makes me smile.
Saturday was Bruce's birthday. Haley and I baked a cake and Haley added a special ingredient. She put her face really close to the bowl and said "Daddy I love you". I looked at her and she said "Look mommy now there's love in the cake!". Yes, it was heart melting and sweet. But the highlight of my weekend was when she was eating the cake. I was in the other room and I heard Bruce ask her if the cake was good. She said "yup! mommy makes the BEST cakes". Did you read that? I make the best cake. So there is SOMEONE out there that likes my culinary skills! Right there is the reason I had children.

Mommy and Honey
Haley decided to play "Mommy and Honey" tonight. Whenever she wants to role play that someone is the daughter, she calls them honey. I guess I call her that alot, but I don't see it. Anyways, I went along with the game because it's always interesting to see how she portrays being mommy, and I can show her what she is like. To those of you with babies or no children, let me warn you now: although the game can be fun, it's never easy to see yourself through your child's eyes!
The first thing she does is goes and gets a cup from her kitchen and tells me she has her coffee. Then she tells me I need to put my clothes in the hamper, then gets a little twirked telling me that I have toys all over and they need to be put away. Ok, I do tell her these things alot, fair enough. As I'm pretending to put my things away, she tells me its time for her to talk to Daddy and goes to him and asks him about his day. He goes along with it and talks to her like it's me. The whole time they are talking, she is drinking her coffee.
I start in with the "mommy, play with me" over and over as she does to me. She says "no, I have to pick up, feed the baby and make dinner, then I will play with you." Again, fair enough, I do that. As the game went on, I see her sighing, getting agitated, making excuses why she can't pay attention to me, etc. She pulled a chair up and did the whole "I want to talk to you about this" thing. She took even took a pretend phone call. By this time, I'm feeling pretty crummy because she was being honest, this is how some days go.
Finally she stopped, came over to me and put her hands on my face and told me she loved me and we could make dinner together. She was all done doing things and it was time for me. She kept cupping my face in her hands and talking to me really sweetly. I felt so much better! So I guess the lesson I learned was that I do have my short comings and I need to relax (she really doesn't care how high the mountain of dishes gets) but in the end, I'm a good mommy. The other lesson I learned? I drink too much coffee! The whole time we were playing she kept drinking from her cup and even went back for refills, each time sighing and saying "I need more coffee"!!!

Fay is not so bad
It's been raining for 3 days now, non stop. Windy and rainy and dark and gloomy. Sounds terrible but I love it! I wish I was home for it, home with the family in my pajamas doing rainy day stuff. I just know by Saturday it is going to be sunny and hot, but I guess that's just how it goes.
Do you ever get that wave of emotion come over you that you can't explain, like a slew of memories all blurred into one, where you kind of get lost in the moment of it? That's what rainy days bring for me. It's this blurry mess of memories of rainy days with my mom, just her and I. They all seem to be from about Haley's age, and I knew those days were special and that she loved me and I just felt secure. When that wave comes over me, even though it may only be for a second, it is the most comforting feeling I know. It makes me wonder if the little moments I share with Haley now will come back to her when she is an adult. I look forward to having those moments with Megan too. The random moments between mother and child that to the mother are just another day, but to the child it is golden.
Bring on the rain! (and a big pot of chili....)
